I
set out on October 20 for the Dwarf Pine Barrens of Long
Island in search of the
Buck
Moth (Hemileuca maia).
Seeing one, or many, wasn't an issue. The males fly
during the day and can be locally common. The goal was
to obtain photographs, a challenge considering
that they're seen darting through the woods in search of
females that are somewhere in that haystack. To
make the story short, luck prevailed and the challenge
was met, as can be seen from this individual
resting in a natural position on the host plant
scrub oak. |
