I'll probably never show a
duller moth than this one. But as we know, beauty is not
necessarily what it takes to take MOW honors. If you've
been in the pine barrens in May, you may have seen
multitudes of moths flying off pine trees that you
approached too closely. What it is is the Yellow-headed
Looper Moth (Lambdina bistriaris).
Never did I expect to see this species at Jamaica Bay,
as I did May 24. The inevitable question is whether they
arrived in conjunction with the recent plantings of
pitch and white pines at the Refuge or had been there
all along? |
