September 24 at Floyd Bennet
Field was a bang up night for Noctuids, including a
number of coastal and sand dune specialists that fly in
the early fall. The look of this one suggests it would
blend right in on sand. It's Ommatostola lintneri.
I haven't seen an English name for it, so I'll call it
Sand Wainscot. Its
closest relative in North Amercia may be the introduced
Large Wainscot (Rhizedra lutosa), rather than the
species of the large genus Leucania. That would place it
in the Apameini group. |
