This was one of the holdouts --
a species known from Jamaica Bay through someone else's
record. But now -- here's one to call my own. It's a White-lined
Sphinx (Hyles
lineata) that came to my black light at
the Wildlife Refuge August 24. My Covell book says that
it is sporadic northward. So, possibly, it signals the
start of summer southern stray season around Jamaica
Bay. Hopefully, other goodies are on their way. It's
doubtful, though, that any will be snappier looking. |
