This is Niphonyx segragata
and it’s one of our newer moths. I recorded a couple
of these at
Jamaica
Bay
and one in
Westchester
back in the 2001-2 time frame. I wasn’t able to get it
identified, as it was not known to most North American
observers. About a year ago, I got word from Don
Lafontaine through Dale Schwietzer that is was becoming
common in southern New Jersey and Delaware – and the
identity of this Asian species was now known. This
individual, found August 15, was the first in four years
of surveying at Floyd Bennet Field. |
