The Mulberry Wing
In a perfect world, one could walk up to any moth, simply photograph it, and be able to identify it. But this isn't a perfect world and we have genera that pose identification challenges. The beige and sand colored moths in the Noctuid subfamily Hadeninae are a case in point. While a trained eye may be able to identify them from the forewing alone, getting one to reveal its hind wing -- as I did -- can help a lot. The pure white hind wing of Leucania lapidaria distinguishes it from the better known Many-lined Wainscot. The photo was taken at the Hunt Sanctuary August 20.
