The Mulberry Wing
In my annotated list of Jamaica Bay moths, I note for the Velvetbean Caterpillar Moth (Anticarsia gemmatalis), "so far only seen in the warm fall of 2001 ... 4 October to 3 November". That's suggestive of a species migrating in from points south, but I don't really know. That's one reason to keep a survey going. For the first time in three years, one makes an appearance -- specifically at Floyd Bennet Field, on the much earlier date of September 6. By the way, this is a Noctuid despite the geometer-like wing spread.
