From
the looks of this thing, it seems certain to be a Bog
Holomelina (Holomelina lamae), of the
Arctidae family (tiger moths). According to my copy of
Covell, it's found only in bogs. I'm not sure where the
bog is at Muttontown Preserve. A nearby wet area is
fenced off, so I've never had a good look at it. Perhaps
this thing lives in other wetlands, like the Bog
Lithacodia which I regularly find in sedge marshes. The
date of this picture is August 18. |
