The Mulberry Wing
Here's another moth picture that came to me from eastern Long Island. It was taken by Patrick Santinello at his home in the Hither Woods section of Montauk July 25. It's a Scarlet Underwing (Catocala coccinata). The larva feeds on oaks, especially scrub oak (same as the Buck Moth), although that's not one of the three species of oaks that Patrick tells me are in his yard.
