The Mulberry Wing
I've extolled the virtue of checking that common milkweed for moths. But don't go running out to check it because I said so -- it's now out of bloom in most places. But if you have butterfly bush around, that will be the ticket for the next two months. This particular plant at Floyd Bennet Field featured The Little Wife, Bay and Ultronia Underwings, and various other moths including this Common Hyppa (Hyppa xylinoides) -- a first for the Jamaica Bay survey. The picture was taken July 16.
