It's
that time of year when Common Milkweed is at its peak.
It's a magic flower for butterfly lovers, attracting
hairstreaks, skippers, and more. But as I've pointed out
before on this page, it's full of life after dark as
well. Shown here is a Veiled
Ear Moth (Amphipoea velata), of
the Noctuid subfamliy Amphipyrinae. I counted about 20
of these at the Hunt Sanctuary June 26. Compare that to
one that finally showed up at a light by morning, it
emphasizes how incomplete surveying by black light alone
can be. |
