The Mulberry Wing
I've been seeing enough of the tiger moth Delicate Cycnia of late. When one came along August 11 at Floyd Bennet Field, Kings, Co. that seemed noticeably smaller than usual, I thought it worthwhile to get some pictures. As you can see, the orange along the costa tapers off well before the apex of the wing. That combined with the smaller size should indicate that this is an Unexpected Cycnia (Cycnia inopinatus), whose range in Covell is listed as New Jersey south. So I have to say it. I wasn't expecting this.
