This
is an unusual moth. Oh, don't look for odd markings or
physical characteristics -- that's not it. Rather, it's
in the timing. The Noctuid subfamily Noctuinae is a group
that has a number of multi-brooded species, but mostly
univoltine species that fly in late summer and early
fall. In contrast, the unique Reddish
Speckled Dart (Cerastris tenebrifera)
has a single flight in the early spring. This one
appeared at the James Ramsay Hunt
Sanctuary in Westchester
County, April 19. |
