This is another of those weeks that I decided to forego the fancy in favor of a species you ought to get familiar with. This Noctuid is a Glossy Black Idia (Idia lubricalis). It's perhaps the most frequently encountered moth at baited trees everywhere. It can also be found in the day by looking in tree cavities or old dark barns. As often as I've photographed it, this one at Jamaica Bay July 15 was unusual in being captured with its wings spread.
