This looks like an underwing, but it can't be on May 5 -- although it is in the same Catocalinae subfamily. This is a Graphic Moth (Drasteria graphica), a specialty of sandy areas with heather (beach or pine barrens) and easily found in the daytime. The site was Floyd Bennet Field, Kings co.
